Although in many states there are no educational requirements needed to be a dental assistant, in Massachusetts there are some rules to follow. A new law from the legislature of Massachusetts has determined that you should complete a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. This program is usually takes about nine to eleven months and you will get a certificate once you finish the education. Of course, there are other places to get the certificate aside of dental schools. Many community colleges, vocational schools, technical institutes, and universities offer this kind of program. Therefore, as we have mentioned so many times in our previous posts, you should be careful when looking for a dental program/school. Always ask whether they are accredited or not.

The law also mentions that a dental assistant in MA cannot operate radiography machines unless they are under direct supervision of a dentist, and complete the course and exam in radiological techniques and safety. Alternatively, you can be Massachusetts Formally Trained Dental Assistant (FTDA).

If you want to be allowed to operate the machine under general supervision, you should apply to be a Massachusetts Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) or have the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification.
